Musicians, creativity, and intelligence

Musicians are on my mind and in the media.

Musician Tammy Wolkenfeld is majoring in flute performance the University of Kansas. She is a wonderful example of a bright girl who seems to have mastered a balance between work and music. In the article, Tammy also noted how difficult it can be to stay focused on practice, and credits teachers and mentors for their role in her persistence.

Read her story here:

And then, here’s an article on the benefits of studying music:

Researchers at Vanderbilt University found that musicians seem to use both sides of their brains better than non-musicians. They seem to be more creative, have enhanced verbal abilities, and higher IQs than their non-musical peers. All the more reason to keep practicing…

Until next time, be inspired, be creative, be you.

At one time or another, most creative people have heard this from the people who love them:

“You can’t make any money doing that!”

Check out this New York Times article that profiles musician Caleb Bruhans. And remember, people actually do make money doing what they love the most - whether it’s making music, making art, or writing. Focus your vision on the life you want to create, and start moving in the direction of your vision.

A Man of Many Talents, Eager to Use Them All
Caleb Burhans is part of a new generation that doesn’t feel compelled to specialize and works easily in classical, rock and much in between.
